B R O C H U R E

LIBRARY At one time, a library was regarded as a storehouse and books were meant for preservation. The librarian was supposed to be a custodian, who did not encourage the use of books. As far as possible a librarian kept out of the way of the readers. Libraries tended to be passive and archival institutions.

A modern library, with a few exceptions is regarded as a service institution. Its aim is to enable the users to make the most effective and efficient use of the recourses and services of the libraries.

LIBRARY COMPUTERISATION means, the mechanization of library house keeping operations. It is necessary to do it successfully. Automation of libraries started in late 70s in few special libraries, has now reached most of the school libraries.

Computer has its impact on almost every step of human life. Libraries are not exceptions to that, Automation, i.e. use of computer has changed the whole structure and working environment of the library. It is difficult to handle a large amount of increasing information without computer. Automation relieves the library staff of repetitive work and also takes less time to process data and retrieve information. Thus saving the time of the users and staff.

Library Management Software, its selection is very important. Software is generally a package. It is invisible and unverifiable till it is acquired. There are so many library need-based software packages to day in the software market. You know some names also, CDS/ISIS, Alice, Oliver, WHIZKID, TULPIS, and TECHLIB etc. Though it is not possible to evaluate exhaustively all these software packages. For selecting software for computerization of the library, its programming language and Database should also be kept in mind.
PARCHMENT Library Organization began its activities in 2003 by a group of library professionals in Kottayam, among the libraries of Kerala. By the help of some senior librarians of University libraries and Research libraries, started this team to provide professional assistants to the libraries for Books Classification, Cataloging and manual works. And also started to supply library furniture, accessories and equipments. When the new generation libraries turned to the way of modernization, PARCHMENT launched most user-friendly library management software used with advanced technology and tools, named PALibS

PALibS is integrated, library management software. After a comprehensive study, discussion and deliberations with the senior professionals in this field the software was designed to automate all house keeping operations in library. The software is suitable not only for the academic libraries, but also for all types and size of libraries. The first version of software i.e. PALibS v0.1 was released in 2005. The latest version of the software i.e. PALibS v0.2 developed in C#. NET with MS SQL released in January 2009. With in a short period, the new version could be installed more than 100 libraries in Kerala and neighboring states. PALibS v.02 is multi-user software, supporting Barcode and Multi-Lingual Unicode features. One of the major attractions of PALibS is its robust OPAC. It adheres to internationally acceptable MARC 21 formats.
